Ground combat development

Hello All!

A bit of update regarding the ground combat aspect of the game. This will deviate somewhat from the combat found in the original game. In the old game, the combat was the weakest element. It was hectic, hard to control and usually boiled down to frenetic clicking on the cannons and long waits until you could machine gun down the last remnants of the ground troops. Not much fun.
I thought it should be addressed and came up with some changes to spice it up.

  • The combat will be turn based. It should give better control over your forces and speed up the engagements.
  • Various ground units will be available with differing stats, strengths and weaknesses. Generic close combat, long range and mounted soldiers on mammoths with some special soldier types.
  • The maps will have randomly generated terrain features like forests, lakes, hills. These features can hinder movement, line of sight or provide cover for troops.
  • Combat wagons such as machine guns and cannons will be able to rotate the turrets and attack in an arc.
  • Combat wagons are also affected by line of sight. Machine guns need it to engage enemy units. Cannons don't need it but firing without line of sight will increase shell dispersion. You can take advantage of hills to protect your train from enemy cannon fire.
  • You will be able to run away from the fight in certain cases
  • There will be non train-on-train engagements, like combat against raiders.
  • You will be able to split your train into two segments using a special wagon. The section that has the engine will be the combat segment and it will show up in the ground combat map. The other section will be left out of the screen. This way, your train will not be extremely long in combat.
